News Bulletins
30th Sept '08 "Stephanie returns/County Event - Southampton"
It was terrific to see Stephanie Millward, fresh from the Bejing paralympics back at the pool last Wednesday. Sporting a Great britain tracksuit and carrying Silver chop sticks (a momento of her participation). The swimmers really appreciated her being there, and I hope have been inspired. Stephanie made 3 finals out of her 4 events, finising a tantalizing 4th in the 100 backstroke. A superb effort and well done.
On Sat 27th Jamie Butler represented Wiltshire in Southampton, with Jim as the lead coach. This was an excellent event, well run and highly competitive, and the Wilts contingent contributed fully. I don't have full results, hopefully these will be available from the Wilts Website shortly.

13th Sept '08 "Summer League - Rd 4 "
Corsham A and B teams approached the final round of this years summer league with differing goals, the A team to get promoted and the B team to stay in Division 4.
For the A team it was good news as a terrific evening of entertaining racing ended with a hard earned victory on the night and promotion secured to division 2. As expected, the competition from our rival teams was intense and Warminster took and early lead in the gala, but with a string of excellent performances and results, things turned our way and going into the last quarter Corsham had established a nice cushion. There were so many good swims, I'm not going to pick out any particular swimmers, but I would like to give a mention to the Girls Open with Nikki Harris and Heather Knight who really swam for the club.
Unfortunately not such good news for the B team. It was always going to be a tough ask to stay in div 4 and to have come so close to achieving that is terrific. I don't have any details of the gala but well done to all those swimmers who put in so much effort.

6th Sept '08 "Buckles Trophy "
Apart from the carnival, there was another big event in Trowbridge, the Buckles Trophy. A great opportunity to give swimmers experience in different distances, against very strong opposition. Corsham sent a very young team and the application of everyone was excellent, especially from the youngest members. They certainly deserve a mention so well done to Felicity Birkett, Libby Harris, Lucy cotton, Maddy Moore and Lucy Stanley, and for the boys, Richard Meiklereid, Jesse Bacon, Sam Ross and Jamie Orner. Also worthy of a mention are Alex Moore, Elizabeth Renahan and Joe Ross in the u;/13 age group, who were really thrown into the deep end as it were and gave it their all.
Overall, Corsham finished third with Trowbridge taking the honours, congratulations to them and all the teams present on a very enjoyable gala.

1st Aug '08 "Another Round Up "
OK, well it's time for another Swimming summary, but if you all want more detailed write ups then somebody needs to send me reports. My name's not Reuters you know.
Open water swim, OK Stuart does send me reports. This went very well, and we were represented by two of our indomitable "Oldies" (their words, not mine) so well done to them. Results can be seen at the Wilts web site.
Summer League B Team competed in their round 3 but despite competing briliantly considering all the changes that were made, were unable to keep their run going and finished 4th behind Swindon Dolphins. This leaves them with a battle in the final round to stay in this division, but we like battles here at Corsham.
Bath Non-National Qualifiers: We sent a Kylie Monogue (small but perfectly formed) squad of swimmers to Bath Uni for this event over the weekend of 19th/20th. It turned out really well and from the feedback, the swimmers enjoyed it and gained from the experience. So let's have a few more next time. There were some terrific personal bests, club records and generally strong swims. Alex Jones returned with 2 silver medals, and whilst nobody else medalled Megan trollope, Peter Ammel, Laurence Meiklereid and Lauren Jones were all great.
Well, that's it for the summer. Have fun and stay fit.

13th July '08 "Ironman Switzerland "
Dave Moxham and Ian Moore who both train with the Masters on Wednesday and Saturdays took part in the Ironman Switzerland on Sunday 13th July. This event comprises a 3.8km swim in open water, a 180km bike ride and 42.2k run. Both guys completed the course - Dave in 10 hours 33 minutes and Ian in 12 hours 52 minutes (coming 402nd and 1486th of 1809 male competitors). A fantastic achievement and perhaps they deserve a session or two off to recover now.

12th July '08 "Summer League Round 3"
Corsham A team were in action over at Trowbridge, where the water was as pure as a Huw Parks diametric opposite. Just in case we needed reminding, Warminster showed this is going to be a tough campaign and put on an outstanding display of competitive swimming and Trowbridge weren't far behind either. For the team to extend their advantage at the top of the division by 7 points, really speaks volumes for every member of the team. Every point was precious and everyone battled hard. Even so, with just the final 4 relays to go we were just behind, but by winning those last 4 events in magnificent style the win was secured. This was a very exciting gala with superb racing and credit must go to all the teams present. Just to pick out a couple of swimmers: Lauren Jones bagged 2 individual wins, as did Melissa Birkett (one being up an age group) and Mike Edmundson. It was great to see Jamie Butler back in competition and he started the evening off in great style with a win in the 100 IM. I'd like to give a mention also to Hayley and Kelly Orner (or is it Kelly and Hayley, never can tell). I think they've really stepped up this year and are making huge contributions.
Final scores: Wroughton 91, Trowbridge B 130, Warminster 135, Corsham 142
The C team were also in action at the Link. Details to follow.

2nd July '08 "A Quick Roundup "
It seems that a lot has gone on recently that has not been reported, so here's a quick round-up of swimming stuff.
The district events took place as usual. The Youth write-up is below, but we also had Melissa Birkett swimming in the Age-groups in her Team Bath hat, and she put in a very good performance in the 100 backstroke. Beating her short course PB in a 50m pool.
Melissa also took part in the sprints with 4 (I think) more PBs. Joining her were Myles Hickman, who also had a very successful sprints with 4 PBs which included a couple of victories, and Steve Worthy, still racing hard and loving it. Well done to all.
The Club Sprints went off extremely well. Excellent racing and a few new Championship records. Also, special mention go to Sam Ross and Amy McRae as they posted new Club Records in the 50 Breaststroke. Results are here for Session 1 and Session 2.
Finally, the Summer League round 2. The division 3 (Corsham A) write up is very short as this meet was postponed due to the water being too wet, but the warm-up was exceptional. Corsham B did extremely well to finish 3rd in Div 4, and I've noticed have been given 3rd in the first round also after a re-calculation, so that's brill. Let's see if we can hold that place. Corsham C in their epic battle with Tigersharks are doing great. A lot of first time competitors here, but they're swimming their colective socks off and we're extremely proud of them.

10th May '08 "Summer League, Round 1"
Corsham A gathered for a new season of Summer League at Springfield. Never sure what each year will bring, or what the new opponents will be like, but it was a very satisfactory start, Corsham finishing top with a 12 point cushion over Warminster. There were excellent performances across all the age groups. I think especially pleasing were the performances of the younger age groups, with the boys team of Sam Ross, Jonathon Brend, Oliver Fisher and Joe Roland gaining 3 outright wins as well as other good finishes. They were matched by the girls, with Charlotte McGettigan, Ella Humphries, Charlotte Rice and Lauren Jones also with 3 outright wins. So well done to those and all the swimmers, keep it up.
The B and A teams also competed extremely well I'm told. Many of the C team competing for the first time. i'll post a report when I get one.

30th Mar '08 "Wilts Age Group "
An larger than normal number of Corsham swimmers qualified for this years age group Wilts Championships held at The Lnk centre, Swindon. Satisfying enough in itself, but made even better by the performances. There really were some outstanding results and loads of PBs.
The 100m Fly being a case in point. Peter Ammel and Megan Trollope absolutely stormed the second 50 to improve their PBs by 8 and 17 (yes 17) seconds respectively. Hayley and Kelly Orner knocked about 7 seconds off as did Huw Parks (good enough for 3 rd place). Huw also gaining a 3 rd place in the 200m fly.
Overall, medals were hard to come by, as you’d expect and our only other top 3 finish was Lauren Jones who gained a 3 rd place in the 11 year Girls 100m Breaststroke. However, the competitiveness of our swimmers was very encouraging. Jesse Bacon, in his first Wilts Bagcats looked great in winning his heat, and our young boys trio of Duncan Wilson, Sam Ross and Matthew Harris placed highly. Of the older boys, James Marygold came so very close to breaking the 1 minute mark for the 100m freestyle Lawrence Meiklereid as always was outstanding in the backstroke events and Alex Jones had 5 PBs out of 5.
It was a similar story for the girls. In addition to those mentioned above, Saffron Green placed well in the 50 freestyle and breaststroke and Melissa Birkett, who had an extremely busy championship, confirmed her District place in the 100m Backstroke.
Full results can be viewed on the Wilts ASA website.

15th Mar '08 "Winter league finals "
Well, the usual mayhem, but you have to love these finals.
Down in Trowbridge, the A team found themselves without several key swimmers, but in a true testiment to the spirit of the team, they came through with flying colours. Those people swimming up did so magnificently and the team cruised to a second successive 2nd gala victory. Let's give the young 'uns some lime-light today. The boys with Elliot Berning, Huw Parks, Matt Harris and Dominic Meiklereid have always given their all, and the girls with Megan Trollope, Lauren Jones, Saffron Green, Charlotte McGeettigan and Zoe Walters look a very promising group. The boy and girl swimmers of the gala were Steve Worthy and Emma Mortimer.
There was a terrific atmosphere at the pool and I must thank and congratulate all the other teams present for their contribution and sportsmanship.
Unfortunately, some dufus forgot to take his camera, using some excuse about being on a wave of euphoria after the Welsh Grand Slam.
The B team were placed 16th in this years final rankings (their highest ever placing in the winter league), which meant a final against A teams Wootton Bassett and Wroughton, plus Tigersharks B. This was always going to be a tough tie and it was not really surprising that the team finished 4th on the night. However, after 20 races they were only 4 points behind Tigersharks and had gained lots of second and third places. Team spirit was as strong as ever and what they may have lacked in terms of performance, they certainly made up for in terms of support. This was undoubtedly the noisiest B team I have ever heard! It was decided not to award "Swimmer of the Gala" this time as it was a genuine team effort. Thanks to everyone who has assisted at this years winter league fixtures, and to the small army of mums and dads who turned up to support on Saturday.
Keep an eye on the Wilts Web site for full results (not available at the time of writing).

8th Mar '08 "Wilts Youth Champs "
This years youths championships saw the largest ever number of competitors from the Club and they all acquitted themselves well. We had two outright wins, several podium finishes, and a haul of silver and bronze medals. So well done to Melissa Birkett, Amy McRae, Emily Hall, Alice Wilson (6th in the Junior Championship for 100 freestyle), Ellen Wilson, all of whom won silver or bronze medals. The boys did slightly better with outright wins in their age groups for Jamie Butler, Jack Thomas and Steve Worthy (by 100th of a second - phew!). Other podium places went to Myles Hickman, James Marygold (competing in his first Youth Championship) and Richard Worthy, for places obtained in the Junior & Senior championship for 50m breaststroke. Other medal winners were Matthew Cruse, Matthew Evans & Nicks Parks, plus great performances from Max Hamblin and Ben Leverett-Jacques. Special mention for Steve, Jack and Matt for their 1,2,3 in the Open 200 metre breaststroke.
Full results for this years Youth can be found on the Wilts ASA website

16th Feb '08 "Wilts Masters 2008 - Round 1"
Andy Chapman and Stuart Gibbs accompanied new girl Nikki Harris to Tidworth on Saturday and planned an assault on the Masters competition where the races on offer were: 50 back, 100 fly, 25 breast and 100 free.
Nikki excelled by winning 3 gold medals in her races and also setting new county records in all of them!!!
Andy set a new county record in the 100 fly, took another 2 golds and a further bronze.
Stuart took a bronze in the 100 fly and set 3 PBs.
Congratulations to all swimmers.

9th Feb '08 "Winter League Rd 3 "
Round 3 of the Winter League and whilst the 'B' team were hosting at Corsham, the 'A' team travelled down to Salisbury. In much the same fashion as the other rounds, the team gave it all and again came away with some notable wins, where again, the u/17 and Open boys were exceptional. I'm not going to pick out any individuals this time, because it's frankly very hard. Despite all efforts, it looks as though we'll once again be in the 2nd Division final, but well done on another great effort.
The 'B' team as I say were in action at Springfield. Sorry, but I don't know what happened here, so if someone can send me a brief report I'd be very grateful. I am confident though that they all swam their collective socks off and made Alan (McRae & Hall) very proud.
When they're available the results can be found on the Wilts ASA web site.

3rd Feb '08 "Wilts Sprints "
A Corsham Team represented the club at the annual Wilts Sprints at Milton Road, and did much to be please and proud of. I haven't scoured the results, so I apologise if I do anyone an injustice, but there were noticable swims for Myles Hickman in the Breaststroke and Freestyle, Amy McRae in the Breaststroke, Laurence Meiklereid in Backstroke, James Marygold in Fly and Freestyle and Sam Ross in Freestyle (and I think a couple of other strokes).
Other swimmers, who all swam well were Emily Hall, Steve Worthy (who was a bit under the weather), Matt Cruse, Alex Jones, Matthew Harris, Lauren Jones and Jonathon Brend.
Well done to all. The complete set of results can be seen and downloaded from the Wilts Web site.

26th Jan '08 "Winter League Rd 2 "
Round 2 of this years Moonraker Winters league saw Corsham 'A' travel to Trowbridge while Corsham 'B' were down the road in Devizes.
The 'A' team were in outstanding form and regularly competed for the higher places in all age groups, but especially in the boys higher age groups where they notched up several excellent wins. At one stage only 5 points seperated us from the second place held by Swindon Dolphins A and we finished a creditable third on the evening. We do have some born sprinters who excel at these events. Mike Edmunson, Myles Hickman, James Marygold, Huw Parks, Alice and Sarah Wilson, Amy McRae, Melissa Birkett and Megan Trollope all stood out in their age groups, but they need support and the whole team (too hnumnerous to mention) were terrific. A special mention to for Williams.
The 'B' team achieved a very good 2nd place on the night, only losing out to Swindon Dolphins. 25 2nd places shows the consistency of the team. I'm waiting for a detailed write up, but I do know that Matt Evans was outstanding, swimming in 2 age groups.
When they're available the results can be found on the Wilts ASA web site.

12th/13th Jan '08 "Corsham Open "
I know it's way too late, but I thought I'd better put up a short bulleting about this years open meet, which in my humble opinion was the best I've seen. Great swimming, from many swimming in a gala for the first time to the more seasoned competitors, and perhaps more satisfying was the terrific atmosphere. Real sportsmanship was on display from all the teams taking part and we thank them all for that and contributing greatly to the weekend.
Of course a huge thank you goes out to all the volunteers who helped. In many cases this meant they were unable to watch the swimming, but it really wouldn't work without them. Also we must thank those officials from other clubs who gave up their time to help us out.
The feedback has been extremely positive, but we're always looking to improve, so please send in any suggestions.
