Wiltshire Open Water 1.5km 12-14 Age Group
On a perfect Summer’s evening, Hannah Lias set off as the youngest swimmer in a group of 24 on two laps of the course in her first open water competition. The competition was organised by Wilts ASA and was held at Lake 32 of the Cotswold Water Park. She kept in close company with a swimmer from Pewsey ASC all the way round and completed the course in a respectable 28 minutes 56 secs (just over 1 minute slower than her time for the distance in the pool – possibly something to do with no ends, taking a scenic route between bouys and/or the temperature of the water!)
Wiltshire Open Water 1.5km Swim
Shorter distance - similar results.
There was much stronger competition with over 80 swimmers on the night.
Paul Bacon won the Over 40s (possibly with a new County record to go with his 3km record) with Sean Browne being edged out in a very tough category. Stuart Gibbs won the Under 40s (also possibly a new County record).
I understand that Hannah Lias also swam, but I don't know how she got on as I arrived so late.
Wiltshire Open Water 3km Swim
With no Corsham youngsters taking part in this event, it was left to 3 of our older members to battle their way around 4 laps of Lake 32. Paul Bacon (swimming in his first ever competitive swimming race) and Stuart Gibbs swam shoulder to shoulder all the way round with Stuart just pipping Paul by 3 seconds in the final sprint. New member Sean Browne (dusting off his goggles after 23 years out of the water) came in not far behind.
Summer League, A Team Report
I didn't get the opportunity to tell most of the swimmers how pleased and proud I was with their efforts last Saturday. This was always going to be a tough year, competing as we are against 3 very strong teams, but to do so with 14+ swimmers unavailable made it a huge ask. I especially want to mention the youngest age group, Edward, Oliver, Charles and Elliot for the boys and Hannah, Robyn, Lucy and Felicity for the girls. We made huge demands of them and I was really impressed with their attitude, commitment and their good humour.
What is a Club Sprint?
The Club Sprints are a great opportunity for swimmers to achieve personal best times in a friendly competitive atmosphere.
What are Sprints?
The Sprints are a Club competition made up of 50m (2 lengths) timed races for each of the four strokes (the fly for under 10’s is only 25m (1 length)).
Who are they for?
Junior and Senior squad members. All swimmers are encouraged to enter.
Well Done to Huw and Peter
Very please to report that at the Gloucester Open last weekend (16th/17th May), Huw Parks achieved a district qualifying time in the 100m backstroke. Huw now joins Peter Ammel (100 Fly) as our representatives at Millfield this year and we wish them well.
C Team Excel at Tidworth (from Alan Hall)
Many congratulations to the small band of Corsham swimmers who swam so well at Tidworth last night. With the late withdrawal of Tigersharks, Corsham's sole opponents were Pewsey & Tidworth (complete with "blow up" Killer Whale), who competed gamely but had to give best to the visitors on the night.
Salisbury Open - April 19th
A small, but enthusiastic team of Corsham swimmers attending the recent Open meet in Salisbury. The relaxed atmosphere and excellent pool coupled with a good medal haul and numerous PBs made for an enjoyable day for all. For the girls, Elizabeth Harris struck Silver three times in the 50m Backstroke, 100m IM & 50m Free, before finally grabbing a well deserved Gold in a thrilling 50m Fly.
Corsham Junior Gala, 25 April 2009
It was a great pleasure to welcome the reconstituted Calne Alfa 4 swimming club along with Malmesbury swimming club to take part in the Corsham junior gala on saturday. It was also a good oportunity to give as many young swimmers as possible the chance to take part in a gala early in their swimming careers as Corsham fielded two teams.
