CORSHAM START SUMMER CAMPAIGN WITH A WIN

Corsham's A team got off to a promising start on Saturday in the first round of the Wiltshire Moonraker summer league with a hard earned victory over Marlborough, Swindon Tigersharks B and Wootton Bassett. Swimming at the Swindon Link Centre, the team maintained a clear lead all evening combining excellent individual performances with some thrilling relay events.

Returning after a lengthy injury absence, Lyndsey Fraser demonstrated why she is still one of the Club's best juniors, edging out her nearest rivals and competing strongly in her relay events. Jenny Lyles returned some storming times in her events and, at the time of writing, is awaiting confirmation of a new County record in the 100 metres freestyle. The three Wilson sisters, Sarah, Ellen and Alice, were as competitive as ever with wins and high places in all of their events. The Hall sisters, Emily and Katie, were also in excellent form recording several personal bests which were mirrored by Emma Boyd and many of the younger girls.

For the boys, it was the turn of Michael Edmundson to shine with a stunning solo performance in the 100 metres butterfly that shocked his highly favoured rival from Marlborough. He was ably assisted by boys team Captain Matt Crofton who faced some stern opposition from the Marlborough open swimmers. In the younger age category, William River's indomitable spirit and sheer determination carried him to a couple of victories, a testament to hard work in training. Ollie Webb was also in excellent form chasing hard and fighting for a top spot in each race. Finally, mention should be made of Michael Riches who was swimming in his first club gala.

Head Coach Peggy Tanner seemed somewhat overawed at the end. "We won" she kept repeating, "We won". Perhaps she was thinking about future rounds when some of the teams "regulars" will be available. What a nice dilemma to be in.
