9th Dec '07 "More Golds for Stephanie "

Stephanie Millward, who you will recall did so well at the British International Disability championships in Sheffield a few weeks ago (see article below), came away with even more gold after a recent visit to Swansea.

Again, many congratulations to Stephanie. A wonderful achievement.

Reports and results can be seen at the British ASA and British Disability Sports web sites.

Nov '07 "Over £700 raised in Sponsored Swim "

Many congratulations to all of the Clubs swimmers who took part in the recent sponsored swim for Naomi House childrens hospice, an event which was part of the Wilts County ASA Centenary Celebrations. At the time of writing, the amount collected exceeded £700, which is a stunning achievement.  The photos show some of the swimmers with their Wilts ASA Certificates and Club Achievement medals. Well done to everyone who took part; you are a credit to the Club. The Club would also like to say a big thank you to Ruth Ross, who organised the event.

It would be appreciated if any outstanding money could be handed to Ruth as soon as possible.

1st Dec '07 "Good starts for both teams in Winter League Rd 1 "

Both Corsham teams produced excellents starts to this years Winter League campaigns.

The A team were at the Link centre, and finished a very satisfying 3rd behind Tigersharks and BOA, but ahead of Chippenham. Always a treat. There were terrific swims throughout, and it's very hard to pick out individuals. In the Open Girls, it was very good to see Sarah Wilson back from Uni to help out, and Sarah Boyd putting in some strong swims despite struggling recently with injuries. Also, Nikki Harris made her A team debut and was great (even got my wife thinking about donning her swim cap). Ellen Wilson made up the open quartet. At the other end of the age spectrum, the youngest girls were gathering more than their share of points. Well done to Zoe, Saffron, Victoria, Megan and Lauren.

For the boys, we've gotten used to the u/17s and Opens performing well, and they didn't disappoint. Not such a rewarding age group of late has been the u/15s, but James, Laurence, Peter and Alex changed all that and challenged hard for the top places. The youngest boys age group of Matthew Harris, Dominic Meiklereid, Duncan Wilson, Elliott Berning and Huw Parks really battled for everything and showed great spirit.

Apologies to all who didn't get a mention, but the whole team deserves credit. Final scores on the evening:

Dolphins 'C': 53, Wootton bassett: 72, Chippenham: 139, Corsham 'A': 148, BOA: 173, Tigersharks 'A':229

Corsham’s B team were pipped at the post by a rejuvenated Durrington team, coming in second ahead of rivals Malmesbury & Devizes. There was never more than two points between the leading teams all evening, but despite some stirring performances from the Club’s open swimmers, is was not quite enough to gain overall victory on the night.

Well done to team newcomers Amelia & Hannah Lias, Lucy Muir, Elizabeth Renahan, Caitlin Tinnion and Zac Green who were swimming their first galas for the Club. This can be nerve racking for some swimmers, but they all performed magnificently.

The Club’s open teams had changed significantly since the Summer league, but remained as strong as ever. The ladies produced one or two runaway victories, with stirring swims from Emily Hall, Sarah Lewis, & Clair Wilson. Matt Evans, Stuart Gibb and Ben Leverett-Jaques were also in good form. However, both teams but would not had done so well without strong support from Becky Whiteside & Richard Worthy, who were in stunning form all evening.

Other swimmers doing well included Jonathan Brend, Colette King and Cliona McKenna, all of whom chased down their rivals and never gave up trying.

Above all, this was a good all round team performance and with next two rounds being at Corsham, the Club has an excellent opportunity to improve on last years overall position in the league.

3rd Nov '07 "2 Golds for Stephanie "

Stephanie Millward, who swims in our Masters sessions, swam at the British International Disability championships in Sheffield over the weekend and came away with two Gold medals in the 100m fly and 100m backstroke.

This is a major achievement and a fantastic result for Stephanie who swam in the s10 category. Swimmers from all over Europe attended the gala which was a huge success all round.

Reports and results can be seen at the British ASA and British Disability Sports web sites.

21st October '07 "Myles and Jamie represent Corsham for Wiltshire "

Myles Hickman and Jamie Bultler swam for the County in Sheffield lasy Sunday. Myles competing in the 16/17 100m Breaststroke and 200m Medley relay. Jamie competed in the 14/15 200m team Medley relay.

They must have done well because Wiltshire won division 2 and have now been promoted to division 1. Well done to both swimmers.

A full report (including photo) can be seen on the Wilshire website .

22nd Sept '07 "Summer League, Division 5 - Corsham 'B' secure promotion "

Brilliant, just brilliant. Well done to all the swimmers and coaches after securing promotion to Div 4 with another gala victory. Hopefully I'll have a report to put here v. soon, but in the mean time you may bask in your collective glory.

The results will be posted on the Wilshire website when available.

8th Sept '07 "Summer League, Division 2 - Round 4: Corsham Go Down Fighting "

Well, the bad news is that we will be in Division 3 next year, but I was very impressed with the team last night. There were some terrific performances and probably our best display of the Summer League this year. As usual the team captains, Mike edmonson and Sarah led from the front and there were plenty of PBs all through the team.

Nice to see the Mortimer Sisters back, with Hannahs' reward for not training for 6 weeks, being a 100m fly, and she did great. Nick Parks I think deserves a mention as I think he won all 4 of his 100m freestyle races this year, and on the girls side i'll give a mention to Megan Trollope, who was given a late berth in the 50m backstroke and won it in some style.

In the end though, despite pulling back some ground, the task was too much. The final scores on the night were: Salisbury 131, Chippenham 126, Corsham 124 and Bradford 117, giving a final tally of Chippenham 589, Salisbury 509, BoA 453 and Corsham 441.

Congratulations to Chippenham and we wish them and all the other teams all the best for next year.

The results will be posted on the Wilshire website when available.

14th July '07 "Summer League, Division 2 - Round 3: Sarahs' Return "

The 3rd round of the Summer League for Corsham 'A' took place at Godolphin School, Salisbury. This was a much improved, and much needed, result for us, as we finished in 3rd place on the night. This closes the gap on Bradford, but still leaves a huge amount to do if we are to avoid the drop to division 3.

The evening was notable for the return of Sarah Wilson from her break in New Zealand, and she immediately showed what we've been missing with a win in the first event of the evening, the Open 100m IM. This was quickly followed up with a fine swim for 2nd in the boys version by Myles Hickman, and there was more success for Nick Parks and Mike Edmonson in their 100m fs and 100m bk respectively.

This gave us an impetus which, though it could not be maintained fully, kept us going for a satisfying finish. The final round will be at Corsham, early in September.

The results will be posted on the Wilshire website when available.

7th July '07 "Summer League, Division 5 - Round 3: Corsham 'B' Keep on Rolling "

Can they be stopped? I don't think so. A third win out of 3 for Corsham 'B' in round 3 of this years Moonraker Summer League sees them firmly placed at the top of division 5 and odds on favourites for promotion with just one round left. This win was paricularly satisfying as they were without several key swimmers, so many congratulations to those who filled in.

I don't know any details of the gala, but I undrstand that in the younger age groups Jonathan Brend earned a very satisfying win and Megan Trollope gave her usual competitive display.

The swimmers of the gala awards were given to Sarah Hickman and Max Hamblin who have been in consistently excellent form all year.

The results will be posted on the Wilshire website when available.

30th June '07 "Summer League, Division 2 - Round 2: It's a Struggle"

Well, after the fanfares for the 'B' team last week it's back down to earth for the 'A' team I'm afraid. In Bradford for the second round of this years Summer League we again struggled and finished 4th behind Bradford, Salisbury and Chippenham.

There was no lack of effort and for a long time we were right in it, getting up to second at one point, but these are very strong teams we're up against and a disappointing last quarter where we were unable to get anything better than 3rd, saw us drift back.

Wins were few and far between, so they deserve a mention. Nick Parks in the 100m freeestyle, Michael Edmonson in the 100m backstroke and the girls u/16 medley relay were terrific and we shouldn't be too downbeat. There were many personal bests and the team spirit was excellent.

I don't know at this stage who was awarded the swimmers of the gala awards, but I think of the many fine performances James Marygold had an excellent gala with eyecatching swims in the last leg of the relays and a massive PB in the 100m breaststroke.

The results will be posted on the Wilshire website when available.

23rd June '07 "Summer League, Division 5 - Round 2: Corsham 'B' win again "

Corsham’s B team won the second round of the Wilts ASA Moonraker summer league and increased their overall lead in Division 5. Swimming at Trowbridge against teams from Devizes, Swindon and host Club Westbury, Corsham’s swimmers gradually overhauled nearest rivals Swindon ASC and won by 9 points on the evening.

At the core of the team was the Open boy’s quartet of Matt Cruse, Matt Evans, Max Hamblin and Ben Leverett-Jacques, who won all of their individual events, plus their relays and individual medley. This was an exceptional performance and one which the author has not seen before by any Corsham team. The Open girls also performed well, particularly Hannah Barclay who paced herself to victory in the 100 metres breaststroke.

Not to be outdone, there were some super individual wins from the younger swimmers, including Matthew Harris in the 25 metres front crawl, Saffron Green in 25 metres front crawl (and without breathing for the whole length!), Katie Hall in the 50 metres breaststroke and, in her very first Club gala, Colette King in the 25 metres backstroke. Also performing well on the evening were Huw Parkes,

Becky Whiteside, Harry Cheetham, Emma Connor and Callum Tinnion. “Swimmer of the Gala” awards were given to Emma Connor and Chris Worthy. Overall, however, praise must be heaped on all those taking part for their spirit, exceptional behaviour and for cheering on their team mates.

The next round will be held on Saturday 7 th July at Milton Road, Swindon. Hopefully the team will maintain its lead, setting up a grand finale at Corsham on 22 nd September.

12th May '07 "Summer League, Division 5 - Round 1 "

Having gained promotion in two successive seasons, the B team went into their first Division 5 gala (the highest place they have ever achieved) with some trepidation. Swimming against A teams from Devizes, Swindon and Westbury, Corsham B found itself in second place for much of the evening, possibly way beyond expectation. However, in a stunning finale, Corsham won several of the last events and ended up as overall winners, some eight points clear of Swindon.

Much of the credit for this victory has to go to the Club’s older swimmers, who won most of their events on the evening. However, at the youngest age group, there were several swimmers who had not swum for the Club before and they acquitted themselves well. Two of them, Ella Parkes and Jonathan Brend were awarded “Swimmer of the Gala “ awards, which were fully deserved. There were lots of personal bests, the team spirit was excellent and many of those present thought it was probably the best gala they had ever attended. And this would have still have been the case, even if the team had not secured the victory. So congratulations also to Swindon, Westbury and Devizes, who did so much to contribute to an excellent evening. Dare we predict a hat trick of promotions?

29th April '07 "Wilts Masters "

Phil and Stuart put the disappointment of being dropped by the 'B' team behind them and focused on Masters swimming at Weston-Super-Mare. Both swimmers excelled, not only winning their events, but setting two new county records in their age groups in the process - Phill in the 200 fly and Stuart in the 200 free.

Well done lads. Can't be easy at your age.

Results should be on the Wilts Masters web site

29th April '07 "Tigersharks Open "

On Sunday, a small, but perfectly formed Corsham team waded up to the Link for the Tigersharks Level 3 open meet. I dont know all the results, as I was only there for the last part, but I do know thatHuw parks did a very good 50m Fly, and Nick Parks picked up at least one medal. Lauren Jones only did two races, but made it count with a gold in the 50m backstroke and a bronze in the 50m Freestyle, both with PBs. brother Alex chipped in with 3 PBsand took home a silver and bronze.

Other swimmers there were Hannah Pinsent, Rhianne Butler, Matt Evans and Ben Leverette-Jaques.

Full results can be found at the Swindon Tigersharks website.

28th April '07 "Corsham 'A' - Summer League round 1 "

Corsham hosted the first of this years Summer Leagues at the Sprinfield Centre, and, if we didn't know it already, this is going to be extremely tough. Our 3 competitors (Bradford, Salsbury and Chippenham) all have strength throughout their teams, and every point will be hard earned.

The evening started well with Myles well placed in the 100m IM and Nick Parks clocking under a minute to gain maximum points in the 100m freestyle. Mike Edmonson followed up with a win in the 100m Fly and after the first 10 events Corsham were looking good in second. Things got tougher thereafter, and despite a sprinkling of high finishes, there were too many forth places for us to hold on to that position and we eventually finished in 4th place behind the winners, Chippenham and 14 points behind joint seconds Bradford and Salsbury.

The next round on the 30th June won't be any easier, and it'll be up to our swimmers to really dig deep and fight for every point, but we can turn this around.

Full results can be found at the Wiltshire ASA website.

23rd Apr '07 "Michael and Jamie Excel"

Following on from the previous report, I'm happy to write that Mike and Jamie did themselves, us and the county proud. Michael getting an individual 2nd and 3rd in the 50 Fly and backstroke respectively with Jamie going one better with a 1st place in the 100 backstroke. Both were also in the relays. I don't have any details of that, but I'm sure they were terrific. Full results can be seen on the Wiltshire ASA website.

26th Mar '07 "Corsham Represented in County Team "

Many congratulations to our two County representatives, Michael Edmonson and Jamie Butler, who have been selected to represent Wiltshire in the upcoming Inter-County gala.

It ain't easy to get a County cap, but both richly derserve their honour in recognition of consistently excellent swimming performance. Let's all wish them good luck in the gala.

Full results can be found at the Wiltshire ASA website.

24/25th Mar '07 "Wilts Bagcats - More Success for Jamie, and Sam chips in too "

In the second weekend of Bagcat action, Jamie continued in his winning ways with another 4 age group gold medals (50 fs, 200 bk, 200 fs, 100 bk), and added a silver (100 IM) and bronze (50 br) just to make up the set. Fantastic swimming, which also earned him the overall bagcat points winner for that age.

Also in the medals was Sam Ross with a 3rd place in the 9yrs 50 fs. Sam completing a fine weekends swimming with a 4th place in the 50 fly. James Marygold, swimming for Calne also got into the medals and will be a huge success for us in the coming seasons.

Although no more medals were won, Corsham swimmers were well represented and the number of PBs set was great to see. Melissa deserves a mention for the shear number of swims she had and she put in consistently strong performances in a very competitive age group. Corsham were also represented by Emma Mortimer, Hayley and Kelly Orner, lauren Jones, Hannah Pinsent, Anna Hickman, Megan trollope, Zoe Walters, Alex Jones, Richard Worthy, Elliot Berning, Lawrence and Dominic Meiklereid and finally Huw Parks, whon must have been delighted with his 50 fly. Well done to all.

Full results can be found at the Wiltshire ASA website.

7th Mar '07 "Corsham Excel in Winter League Finals "

Both Corsham teams were absolutely superb in this years Winter league finals. The 'A' team were winning top spot in gala 2 at Trowbridge whilst the 'B' team were galant runners up in gala 4 at devizes.

Although the 'A' team entered the gala as best qualifiers, the margin of victory in the end (24 points over the second placed team) was outstanding, and it goes without saying that everyone swam teriffically well and played their part. The evening was capped by a stirring victory in the cannon, fittingly brought home by team captain Michael Edmonson. Michael was named most inspritional male swimmer with Ellen Wilson given the honour for the girls. The swimmers of the gala were Jamie Butler and Emily Hall.

The 'B' team were the 4th ranked team at their gala, but soon proved they were above that. Staying in contention for the lead well into the gala before falling behind to a good Westbury team. I don't have many details about this gala (perhaps someone can fill me in), but clearly everyone contributed and can feel proud. I think that special mention must go to Matt Evans and Ben Leverette-Jaques who both swam an incredible number of races this year. Swimmers of the gala were selected and I'll put these up when I get them.

Full results can be found at the Wiltshire ASA website.

10th/11th Mar '07 "Lawrence, Jamie and Michael strike gold"

Over the last weekend, we've had the closing of this years Wilts Youth and the start of the Bagcats. There's been plenty to get excited about. We've had age group golds for Lawrence Meikelreid (12) and Jamie Butler (14) in the 50 backstroke (Bagcats) and for Michael Edmonson in the 100 freestyle (Youth 19/ov). Jamie also took Gold in the 100 freestyle and a Silver in the 200 IM.

Elsewhere in the bagcats, Melissa Birkett was knocking lumps off her PBs with excellent finishes across a range of events and also very encouraging was the performance of James Marygold. Swimming for Calne Alpha, but now training with the club. Other swimmers representing Corsham well were Megan Trollope, Katie Hall, Hannah Pinsent, Richard Worthy and Alex Jones, who all competed extremely well.

From the Youths, there were more medals for Matt Evans (16) and Steve Worthy (17) in the 200 Br and 200 IM and another Silver for Jack Thomas in the 200 IM. And again, probably most pleasing was the performance of the Boys relay team with another bronze and Silver, underlaying the strength of swimming we have in this area.

The bagcats will continue on the 24th and 25th of this month. Full results can be seen on the Wiltshire ASA web site.

24th Feb '07 "Wiltshire Masters"

Possibly the largest team to represent Corsham in the county masters descended on Tidworth in February – and when you hear that it was only 4 swimmers, you’ll probably question as to what had happened to all the other dedicated Wednesday night Masters.  Events on the night were: 50 Back, 100 Fly, 25 Breast and 100 free.

Jonathan Pearce, competing in his first Masters gala, swam well against tough competition in the youngest age group.

Phil Jones and Stuart Gibbs competed against each other where Phil was a comfortable winner taking hard-earned silvers in the fly and free and bronze in the breast.  Stuart managed a bronze in the 50 back.

Making his return after a year long absence, Andy Chapman won gold in the fly and bronze in the free.

Congratulations to all swimmers. Fuoll results can be seen on the Wilts masters web site

Next round is 9th June at the Link in Swindon where the events will be 100 back, 50 fly, 25 free and 100 breast. Let’s hope more Masters swimmers catch the competition bug.  Who knows, perhaps we could enter a relay team!?

3rd/4th Mar '07 "Wiltshire Youth Champs "

From what I've heard, we have plenty to be proud of after the first 8 sessions of this years County Youth championships.

Top of the individual pile comes Miles hickman with at least a Gold (50 breaststroke) and 2 silvers (50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke). There were also medals for Jack Thomas and Max Hamblin and many other excellent performances. Particularly pleasing was our relay, where there was a superb 3rd place in the open and a magnificent 2nd in the 15 age group IM relay. This is top class swimming and speaks volumes for the current strength of the club.

The meet concludes next Sat 10th.

Results can be seen at the Wiltshire ASA web site.

10th Feb '07 "Winter League Round 3 "

So to the final round before the Finals next month. The 'B' team were again down in Tidworth. Lovely pool, shame about the viewing facilities and in partulat the marshalling, which made a bad situation much worse.

The team was badly weakened through non-availability, but those who did swim were magnificent, and we really could not ask for any more, with swimmers regularly swimming up 2 or even 3 age groups. One age group where we were fully represented was in the u/13 girls (Hailey and Kelly Orner, Megan trollope, Zoe Walters and Lauren Jones) and they responded with high placed finishes throughout including two outright victories. But the younger boys also deserve a mention because they tried their utmost all night. So well done and thank you to Peter Ammel, Christian Noone, Duncan Wilson, Huw Parks and Jonathon Brend. Sarah Hickman lead from the front (as team captain), and we must mention Stuart Gibbs and Sarah (I really must find out your Surname), our 2 open representatives, without whom we would have been really stuck. The team just missed out on 4th place (of 6) by a single point. With a full squad for the finals, this team can do really well.

In Salisbury the 'A' team were, as usual, up against very stiff opposition and 4th out of 8 speaks volumes for the team. I wasn't there so can't name names (maybe someone could write a report for me), but clearly this was a great effort and again bodes well for the finals.

4th Feb '07 "Wiltshire Sprints "

As usual, Milton Road played host to the 2007 Wiltshire Sprints. Though not at full strength, we were well represented, and those that swam did the club proud. First mention goes to our tree individual age group winners, Miles Hickman and Emily Hall, both in the Breaststroke and Michael edmonson in the butterfly. Miles also winning the overall Junior Championship title. Also in the Breaststroke Amy McRae produced an excellent second place in her age group and the overall Junior Championship.

In the 9 years age group, Sam Ross was superb to win medals in all 4 of his events. Also adding to the medal tally was Steve Worthy with a brace of Silver medals.

This was a great effort and congratulations go to all the swimmers. In addition to those mentioned above we had Megan Trollope, Duncan Wilson, Max Hamblin, Richard Worthy, Hannah Pinsent, Nick Parks, Hailey and Kelly Orner and Ben L-J.

27th Jan '07 "Winter League Round 2 "

The secound round of this years Winter League meets saw the 'A' team again in the Link, and the 'B' teamdown in Tidworth.

'B' team first cause I was there. It was tough, especially with the boys swimming with just the one open swimmer (Thanks heavens for Andy Chapman), and 2 under 17s, namely Ben and Matt (Evans), who swam goodness knows how many races between them. And let's not forget Peter, swimming up 2 age groups to complete the team. The girls were more evenly balanced and competed well, with the girls open team of Hannah, Charlotte, Sarah (Hickman) and Sarah gaining a notable victory in the Breaststroke. All in all a fine effort.

The 'A' team (also weekened) were again up against the big guns of Tigersharks and Dolphins 'A' teams. Can't give any details here, but a final result of joint third on the night must mean that everyone competed really well.

20th Jan '07 "2Cs open "

I think by now you'll all be fully aware of how well the open meet went this year, both in terms of the organisation and the swimming. Once again Alan (Hall) weaved his magic, with a magnificent display of organisational acumen (just looked that up in a dictionary). We're always looking for ways to improve however, so any suggestions would be welcome.

On the swimming side, the coaches and swimmers can take a lot of credit and also encouragement. Corsham dominated the older boys categories with several medal clean sweeps, but there were strong performances throughout, and many personal bests. To round things off, we provided 3 of the overall agegroup champions (based on Bagcats points), Matt Evans (boys 16/ov), Jamie Butler (boys 14/15) and Lauren Jones (girls 10)

Once again congratulations to everyone that took part.

15th Jan '07 "Welcome to the new year "

Hello again. I'm slowly getting things back together for the new year. As I write, the 2Cs open has just completed. Having been more closely associated with the running of it this year, I can better appreciate the amount of work that goes into organising this event. So a huge well done must go to the organizers and helpers. Many thanks to our co-hosts Chippenham for their support and also to all the clubs who entered swimmers. I hope they all enjoyed the weekend and we look forward to welcoming them back next year.

Dave
