12th dec '06 "2006 Draws to a Close "

Well, here we are again, at the end of another eventful year for the club. The final Springfield training sessions of 2006 will be Monday 18th for width and junior squad sessions, and Wednesday 20th for Senior squad. I'll find out about the Bath sessions and post them, together with the start up dates for next year.

This really has been a good year for the club especially with the number of promising young swimmers coming through, and next year will be an exciting time.

All the years events though have been eclipsed by the passing away of Peggy. She has been and always will be a major part of our club and will be fondly remembered.

It just remains to say, have a great Christmas and we'll see you all in the new year.

Dave

8th dec '06 "Peggy Tanner "

It is with deep regret that Corsham ASC announce the death of their Head Coach Peggy Tanner on Wednesday 6th December.

Peggy was associated with Swimming for over 30 years, supporting and coaching 100s of young people to achieve their potential.

In 2005 she was honoured with the position of President for Wiltshire County ASA.

Her commitment and dedication to Corsham swimming club will be greatly missed.

25th Nov '06 "Winter League round 1 "

My humble apologies to everyone for being so late in getting this on the bulletin list, and even more humble apologies for what's about to follow, which is a very brief write up that doesn't do justice to our swimmers.

Corsham A were at the link for a very tough round involving A teams from Tigersharks and Dolphins. After the gala started in total disarray with what can only be described as a starting fluff, things settled down nicely and the team came away with a very creditable 4th place on the night.

The B team travelled down to Trowbridge and also secured a hard earned 4th despite being very short in some age groups. It's very encouraging to see the b team competing so well, and can only be good news for the future of the club in these competitions.

19th Nov '06 "Elliot excels at Public Schools national champs "

Elliot Berning returned from the annual Public Schools national championships with a superb 4th place in the 100m Breaststroke and for good measure helped his team to a bronze in the freestyle relay.

Sorry, I don't know enough of the details to embellish, but many congratulations to Elliot on a terrific performance.

19th Nov '06 "Masters Inter County gala "

Mike Edmundson, Phil Jones and Stuart Gibbs made their debuts for the county in the Masters Inter County gala held at Horfield, Bristol.  All swimmers acquitted themselves well against strong opposition form Dorset, Gloucestershire, Cornwall, Devon and Somerset.

Mike, who is far too young (and too good) in my honest opinion to be swimming Masters, gave the relay teams a fine start and placed highly in his individuals.  Stuart and Phil managed to achieve some PBs - but someone really needs to teach Phil how to dive in a straight line!

Wiltshire finished 4th.

11th Nov '06 "CORSHAM TRIUMPH IN WILTS ASA SECONDARY TROPHY"

Corsham's B team were worthy winners of this years Wilts ASA Secondary trophy, although they were pushed hard all the way by Westbury. Also taking part were teams from Durrington and Malmesbury, who played their part in making this one of the best galas seen at the Springfield Centre for some while.

Corsham got off to a flying start with wins in the first two races, the boys and girls under 12 medley relay. Making their debut for the Club were Olivia Hobden and Oliver Warren-Fisher, who played a vital part in these wins. Another new Club swimmer was Zac Green, who swam a superb breaststroke leg in the under 14 medley relay. Another storming swim came from Emma Mortimer in the under 12 freestyle relay and she was backed up by strong support from Hayley Orner, who turned in good performances at both breaststroke and butterfly. Bridie Meikelreid and Amy Shorter both swam excellent individual legs in their breaststroke races.

For the boys, both Nick Parkes and Max Hamblin were in good form, forming the nucleus of the under 16 team and running in two victories. Younger brother Hugh Parkes swam an excellent freestyle and butterly leg in his relay events, with Ruben Ward relishing the opportunity to swim in the higher age group and helping the team to victory. Team Captain Peter Edmundson spurred on the open men swimmers to a couple of wins, with Stuart Gibb as reliable as ever, winning his butterfly leg in the medley relay.

This as a terrific team performance, and only lack of space prevents me from mentioning every swimmer individually.

The gala was made complete by being the first official duty for Jean Pitfield, who earlier in the day, had been appointed as the new President for Wilts County ASA, an office which she will hold during the County's Centenary Year in 2007.

The final points total was Corsham 66, Westbury 63, Durrington 54 and Malmesbury 43.

30th Sept '06 "Buckles Trophy "

Corsham set forth for Calne on a Saturday eve, bound for the White Horse Leisure Centre and readied for battle in the Buckles Trophy. The arena was set, our opponents gathered, as big and little Al prepared their clip boards. (I can't keep up this Stuart Hall impression)

Anyway, we did great, and had we not come out the wrong side of a few placement decisions may well have nicked third place. Victories were scarce as you'd expect against the Tigersharks and Dolphins, but there were some terrific performances throughout the team and everyone deserves congratulations.

Myles and Melissa were nominated swimmers of the gala, both were outstanding.

Final results: Wroughton 52; Corsham 97; Tigersharks B 100; Dolphins 131; Tigersharks A 172

16th Sept '06 "Corsham 'B', division champions (again) "

Another great team performance saw Corsham 'B' win the final round of this years Summer League campaign, and with it, clinch the division title and promotion to division 5 for next year.

There were winning performances throughout the team, with the awards for boys and girls swimmers of the gala going to Kyles Butler and Hayley Orner. The open age group lead from the front, with team captains Charlotte Evans and Peter Edmonson providing all the inspiration needed.

9th Sept '06 "Corsham 'A' secure second in Summer League "

Corsham 'A' ended a very satisfying 2006 Summer League campaign in overall second place in Division 2. with Swindon Dolphins pushing for the title, and Bradford and Marlborough fighting to avoid relegation, this was always going to be a tough evenings competition, and despite holding a close 2nd place early on, and then drifting to forth, Corsham fought hard for a final third place on the night.

This is always a team effort, but a few personal highlights are worth mentioning. Amy McCrea finished with an unblemished record in the 100m breaststroke. Miles Hickman deserves a mention for his 100m freestyle PB as do all the 15 year age group boys who have been the mainstay of this years compaign (Jack, Ben, Jamie & Max), and it was good to see Alex Jones back after his long layoff for a broken arm, Alex winning his two individual races.

Congratulation go to the Dolphins 'B' team for their well deserved division win and promotion, and comiserations to Marlborough. We wish them both well for next seasons campaign. Next season, Corsham and Bradford will be joined by Chippenham and Salisbury in division 2. Let's see if we can go one better.

on the night results: Marlborough 111; BOA 144; Corsham 'A' 114; Swindon Dolphins 'B' 127

final results: Marlborough 464; BOA 494; Corsham 'A' 496; Swindon Dolphins 'B' 519

22nd July '06 "Gold for Jamie at National Championships "

Jamie Butler, swimming in his Bath university guise, brought home a relay gold medal from the national Championships at Forge pond, Sheffield. In a very close run final Jamie swam the third leg of the 4 x 100 freestyle relay, putting in a strong performance to set up the anchor leg.

So once again it's congratulations Jamie, something I'll never tire of writing.

24th June '06 "Summer League Division 6 - round 2 "

Corsham 'B' continued their excellent Summer season with another victory in round 2 of the Moonraker Summer League. This win puts them in total control of the division, and barring a complete disaster in the final round (something that simply aint going to happen given the depth of talent and spirit in the team) should see them gain a well deserved promotion for next year. The final round is on September 23rd.

Again, well done to all the swimmers and helpers.

10th June '06 "Western Counties Age Group Championships "

Many congratulations to Jamie Butler on his terrific swim at the Western Counties Age group Championships. Jamie swam the 100m backstroke in 1:08:78 to take first place in the boys 13 year age catagory. The only disappointment was that his time was not quite good enough to qualify for the national championships later this year. Next year Jamie.

13th May '06 "Summer League Division 6 - round 1 "

Not to be outdone by the A team, who had won their gala the previous Saturday, Corsham's B team swimmers ran out comfortable winners of the first round of the Wiltshire ASA Moonraker summer league at Marlborough Leisure Centre on 13th May. Swimming against the home team Marlborough and Tigersharks C, the team chalked up a fairly impressive string of victories, culminating in victory in all but one of the four freestyle relays.

The final scores were Corsham 111, Tigersharks 89 and Marlborough 88.

6th May '06 "Summer League Division 2 - round 1 "

Corsham 'A' got off to the best of starts in this years Summer League series with a magnificent win at Bath leisure centre, 2 points ahead of Swindon Dolphins 'B'. Hardly a race went by without an outstanding performance from a Corsham swimmer, and the team can feel rightly proud.

Not even the loss of half the girls u/12 quartet could put a damper on the evening. Fortunately we had Rhianne Butler and Lauren Jones in the crowd cheering on their brothers, and they stepped in (and up) to help the u/12 girls to a first and second in the relays.

Well done to all the swimmers on a terrific evenings swimming. Full (gushing) report to follow.

Final results: Corsham 'A' 141; Swindon Dolphins 'B' 139; Marlborough 'A' 111; Bradford-on-Avon 108.

1st May '06 "Western Counties Youth Championships "

Michael Edmonson, Corsham ASCs sole representative at the ASA South West Region - WCASA Youth Championships, aquitted himself well and upheld the honour of the club. Of 6 swims he qualified for 3 finals in the 50m Butterfly, 100m butterfly annd the 50m backstroke. he was able to improve his heat times in all his Finals' swims and achieved long course PBs as well.

Congratulations Michael.

18th Mar '06 "Winter League - finals "

And so, once again it was Winter League final time, with Corsham 'A' in the division 2 final at Trowbridge and Corsham 'B' in the division 4 final at Tidworth. The atmosphere (i.e. noise) always goes up several levels for the finals making for a really exciting occasion.

Corsham 'A', who were weakened by omissions, got off to a slow start, but two consecutive second places in the girls and boys open breaststroke relays set things rolling. Although never consistent enough to get into the battle for the top honours, Corsham did get into an exciting nip and tuck dual with Trowbridge 'B'. Special mention must go to Myles, Jack, Max and Matt, who not only performed well in their own age groups, but also put in outstanding peformances when swimming up, in some cases up 2 age groups. Their reward being an excellent 4th place on the night, 10th place overall, ahead of Trowbridge and Tigersharks 'B'.

On the evening results: Salisbury 178; Marlborough 'A' 1166; Wroughton 157; Corsham 'A' 122; Trowbridge 'B' 117; Tigersharks 'B' 67.

25th Feb '06 "Winter League - round 3"

The third round of the Winter league series produced more frantic racing as Corsham 'A' went to Trowbridge and Corsham 'B' stayed at Springfield.

As expected, the standard at Trowbridge was very high and the competition fierce. Corsham 'A' and Wroughton (in lanes 1 & 2 respectively) had a ding dong battle throughout the evening, with the advantage changing several times. In the end however, it was Wroughton who edged ahead to take 3rd place on the night by just 2 points, despite Corsham pipping them for third in a trilling Canon finale. Well done to all the swimmers who battled hard all evening and never stopped trying.

On the evening results: Tigersharks 'A' 191; Dolphins 'B' 148; Wroughton 95; Corsham 'A' 93; Melksham 55.

Corsham 'B' also had their work cut out, but responded magnificently to win the gala on the night by a single point from Swindon Dolphins. This was again down to a terrific all round team performance, and everyone can be proud of their part as we are of them. This all points to an exciting Winter League Final on the 18th March.

On the evening results: Corsham 107; Swindon Dolphins 106; Westbury 92;Swindon Tigersharks 72.

5th Feb '06 "Wiltshire Sprints "

The annual Wiltshire Sprints at Milton Road created the usual festival atmosphere. Especially if, like the Corsham parents, you sat right in front of a speaker.

The swimming was fast, furious and extremely competitive. Star of the day for Corsham was Amy Mcrae with a magnificent 2nd place in the girls 13 year age group breaststroke.

Matt Cruse also had cause for celebration with Corshams only other podium finish, a third in the boys 16 year freestyle, but there were other fine performances to be proud of. Meliisa Birkett swam consistently well to gain good placement in all her events, and Laurence Meikelreid was placed well in the Backstroke. The Wilson sisters, Sarah and Ellen put in their usual battling performances along with Lindsey Mcrae, Sarah Hickman. and Alex Jones

Peggy looked regal in her chain of office as she presented the medals.

28th Jan '06 "Wilts Long Distance - Session 2 "

The second session of the Wiltshire Long Distance championships went ahead at Marlborough College with the girls 800 and boys 1500 events. Corsham were represented in the girls events by sally Thomas, Alice Wilson and Fabienne Blundon. For the Boys we had Jack Thomas and Matthew Cruse.

As you'd expect, the standard was extremely high, especially on the girls side, but all swimmers competed strongly, and I'm sure posted some big PBs. For their efforts Jack and Matthew were rewarded with a 2nd and 3rd in their age groups respectively.

Don't know about you, but I think that anyone who races that distance deserves a medal.

22nd Jan '06 "Wilts Long Distance - Session 1 "

Whatever was wrong with the Tidworth pool on Saturday was fixed in time for the long distance races on Sunday. In the Boys 800m Jamie Butler set a new club record on his way to second in his age group and Matt Cruse posted a PB to gain 3rd. Ben Leverette-Jaques also put in a personal best performance.

For the Girls, Corsham were represented by the Parker sisters, Rebecca and Charlotte. Rebecca emulating Jamie with a new club record to gain a superb 2nd place in her age group.

Well done to you all. The second session (Boys 1500, Girls 800) is next Sunday 28th. Watch this space.

21st Jan '06 "Winter League Round 2 "

Saturday turned out to be a bit of a non-event for Corsham 'B' as the Tidworth pool was deemed unusable and the Winter League gala cancelled. These things happen I guess.

Corsham 'A' made the shorter journey to The Link for their round 2. This was always going to be extremely tough with the likes of Swindon Dolphins 'A', Tigersharks 'A' and Chippenham in the mix, and so it proved. There were no outright wins, but the whole team battled hard throughout the evening putting in some excellent swims and gaining some good finishes. At one point it looked as if we could push Wroughton out for forth place, on the night, but had to settled for a spirited fifth.

It's hard to pick out individuals, but nothing catches the eye like a storming last leg, and Michael Edmonson certainly had a few of those. For the younger boys, Lawrence Meikelreids backstroke was always worth a couple of places.

On the night results: Tigersharks 'A' 208; Dolphins'A' 201; Chippenham 144; Wroughton 109; Corsham 97; Swindon ASC 58

13th Jan '06 "2Cs Open"

Welcome everyone to what hopefully will be a 2006 bulletin page full of interest, entertainment and success. It's certainly started well with the 2Cs Open on the 7th & 8th of Jan running as smooth as smooth can be. It pains me to say it, but much of the credit must go to Alan Hall who really did put in a huge amount of time and effort.

On the swimming side, whilst we could not match our illustrious neighbours (Chippenham) in the medal stakes, we could match them in the cheering and there were many very encouraging swims and some huge personal bests, so well done.

Alan McCrae brought his artistic talents to bear, and though his lens was woefully inadequate compared to that of the Gazette and Herald photographer, he caught some nice shots which can be viewed here.
